Ceramide is a compound composed of a fatty acid and a sphingosine base. It is composed of an amino compound connecting the carboxyl group of the fatty acid and the amino group of the base.Nine types of ceramides have been found in the cuticle of human skin. The differences are the base groups of sphingosine (sphingosine CER1,2,5/ plant sphingosine CER3,6, 9/6-hydroxy sphingosine CER4,7,8) and the long hydrocarbon chains.
