PromaCare® G-Glucan Supports Multi-Level Recovery in UV-Stressed Skin

Visible redness is often used as an immediate indicator of UV-induced skin stress. However, its disappearance does not necessarily mean that the skin has fully recovered. Barrier disruption, increased transepidermal water loss and UV-induced cellular damage signals may persist after the skin appears calmer.

This creates a broader challenge for post-sun formulation. Temporary soothing and surface hydration can improve immediate skin comfort, but effective recovery also requires support at the barrier and cellular levels.

A Structurally Defined Fermentation-Derived Polysaccharide

PromaCare® G-Glucan is a high-purity galactoglucan produced through microbial fermentation. With a purity above 90%, it features a distinctive L-configured, highly branched structure comprising single-, double- and triple-helical characteristics.

This spatial configuration supports interaction with C-type lectin receptors such as Dectin-1, connecting a precisely characterised polysaccharide structure with targeted biological responses.

Evidence Across Three Levels of Skin Recovery

PromaCare® G-Glucan has been evaluated through complementary models addressing barrier structure, rapid post-sun recovery and cellular photodamage.

In a damaged 3D epidermal model, it increased filaggrin and loricrin levels by 372.24% and 683.21%, respectively. These proteins are important components of epidermal differentiation and barrier integrity, supporting the ingredient’s relevance to barrier-repair formulations.

Its rapid post-sun performance was evaluated in a human study using a formulation containing 0.1% PromaCare® G-Glucan. Within three to six hours, significant improvements were observed in skin redness, transepidermal water loss and skin haemoglobin content.

At the cellular level, PromaCare® G-Glucan reduced UVB-induced HMGB1 protein expression by 48.15% within 24 hours at a concentration of 0.0156%. This result provides additional evidence for its application in formulations designed to address UV-related cellular stress.

Formulation Flexibility for Multiple Applications

PromaCare® G-Glucan is naturally water-soluble and available in molecular weights ranging from 0.1 to 8 million Da. This range gives formulators greater flexibility when developing sensitive-skin serums, barrier-repair creams, after-sun products and anti-ageing treatments.

Together, its defined molecular structure, fermentation-derived production and multi-level efficacy evidence support a more comprehensive approach to post-sun care—extending product development from temporary soothing towards visible, barrier-level and cellular recovery.
