In a forecast that resonates with the ever-evolving beauty industry, Nausheen Qureshi, a British biochemist and the brain behind skincare development consultancy , predicts a significant surge in consumer demand for beauty products enriched with peptides in 2024. Speaking at the 2023 SCS Formulate event in Coventry, UK, where personal care trends took the spotlight, Qureshi highlighted the growing allure of modern peptides due to their effectiveness and gentleness on the skin.

Peptides made their debut on the beauty scene two decades ago, with formulations like Matrixyl making waves. However, a resurgence of more contemporary peptides tailored for addressing concerns such as lines, redness, and pigmentation is currently underway, capturing the attention of beauty enthusiasts seeking both visible results and skincare that treats their skin with kindness.

“The customer desires tangible results but also seeks gentleness in their skincare routine. I believe peptides will be a major player in this arena. Some consumers may even prefer peptides over retinoids, especially those with sensitive or reddened skin,” expressed Qureshi.

The rise of peptides aligns seamlessly with an increasing awareness among consumers about the role of biotechnology in personal care. Qureshi emphasized the growing influence of ‘skintellectual’ consumers, who, empowered by social media, web searches, and product launches, are becoming more knowledgeable about ingredients and production processes.

“With the ascent of ‘skintellectualism,’ consumers are becoming more receptive to biotechnology. Brands have simplified the science behind their products, and consumers are engaging more actively. There’s an understanding that by utilizing smaller amounts of material, we can create more effective ingredients through bio-engineering, producing more concentrated forms,” she explained.

Fermented ingredients, in particular, are gaining momentum due to their gentle nature on the skin and their ability to enhance formulation potency and ingredient bioavailability while preserving and stabilizing formulations and the microbiome.

Looking ahead to 2024, Qureshi identified another significant trend—the rise of skin-brightening ingredients. Contrary to previous priorities focused on combating lines and wrinkles, consumers now prioritize achieving bright, radiant, and glowing skin. The influence of social media, with its emphasis on ‘glass skin’ and radiant themes, has shifted the customer’s perception of skin health toward enhanced radiance. Formulations addressing dark spots, pigmentation, and sunspots are expected to take center stage in meeting this evolving demand for luminous and healthy-looking skin. As the beauty landscape continues to transform, 2024 holds the promise of innovation and formulation excellence meeting the diverse needs of the skincare-savvy consumer.
